Queensland Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski has announced he is standing down from his position following an unexpected cancer diagnosis. In a statement to the police force, Gollschewski expressed his disappointment at having to take leave for an indefinite period, emphasising the need to focus on his treatment and rely on his family’s support during this challenging time.

Deputy Commissioner Shane Chelepy will assume the role of acting commissioner starting tomorrow. Gollschewski was appointed to the position in April last year, during a period marked by rising crime rates and challenges related to officer shortages and morale, exacerbated by increasing demands on the service.

His extensive 44-year career in law enforcement included leading Queensland’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic as the state disaster coordinator. Premier David Crisafulli acknowledged Gollschewski’s dedication to upholding the law in Queensland and affirmed the Queensland Government’s support for him as he steps back for health reasons. He thanked Gollschewski for his long-standing service, recognising his integrity and professionalism, which have left a lasting impact on the community.
