In Queensland, an increasing number of businesses are adapting to the demands of a 24-hour economy by expanding their operating hours. This shift encompasses a wide range of industries, including healthcare, hairdressing, and pharmacies, allowing smaller enterprises to cater to the needs of customers who work conventional 9am-5pm hours.

For instance, Co. Nails, located in Fortitude Valley near Brisbane’s CBD, has begun accepting appointments as early as 6.30am four days a week. Owner Chloe Minogue reports that these early slots have quickly become the most sought-after of the day. In another example, Skippy’s Market Fresh in Rothwell has initiated non-stop trading. Owner Elijah Etri noted that despite having only a day’s notice to advertise their 24/7 operation, they welcomed 80 customers between 8pm and midnight on their first night. However, staffing challenges for overnight shifts pose significant hurdles, with Etri indicating that finding personnel willing to cover those hours is a considerable difficulty.

This trend of extended hours is being facilitated by Queensland laws that limit the trading hours of major retailers, thereby enabling smaller businesses to thrive without facing competition from larger supermarket chains, which typically operate from 7am to 9pm. In contrast, larger supermarkets in cities like Sydney and Melbourne often extend their hours, with some remaining open until midnight or beyond, highlighting a disparity in trading practices across Australia.

Woolworths has expressed its support for extending trading hours, advocating for increased flexibility to allow Queenslanders better access to groceries at various times. The Business Chamber Queensland also endorses this idea, suggesting that any adjustments to current regulations would benefit businesses in the state. Communications spokeswoman Emma Clarke drew comparisons with other regions, stating that it is commonplace in European markets for people to enjoy a coffee at 4pm or to shop at midnight.

In response to the growing need for a more vibrant nightlife economy, the Queensland government has formed an expert panel to review operating conditions and promote later trading hours. However, Premier David Crisafulli has indicated his satisfaction with the current balance in trading hours, emphasising the importance of preserving opportunities for smaller retailers while allowing a mix of opening times in the state.

In summary, the landscape for Queensland businesses is rapidly evolving as they embrace longer trading hours to serve a diverse clientele, navigating both the opportunities and challenges that come with a 24-hour economy.
