In an act of bravery, Gavin Perry, a resident of Mudgeeraba on the Gold Coast, Queensland, confronted a group of suspected teenage criminals during a late-night incident. Armed with nothing but a baseball bat, Perry noticed a white Haval SUV parked outside his home and observed three individuals disembarking, prompting concern. As he watched, a police helicopter circled overhead, further heightening his instincts.

Instead of retreating indoors, Perry opted to grab his phone and contact the authorities while preparing to intervene. He expressed his uncertainty about the suspects potentially carrying weapons but felt compelled to prevent them from returning to their vehicle. During this encounter, while two teens managed to escape, one remained behind and appeared distressed, leading Perry to offer assistance.

Using quick thinking, Perry activated his phone’s torch to signal the police, and within approximately half a minute, law enforcement arrived. The boy was taken into custody, leaving the authorities actively searching for his accomplices. The arrested 15-year-old faces charges related to car theft and unlawful vehicle use, as he allegedly participated in stealing the car earlier from an Oxenford residence.

Tegan Kelly, the owner of the stolen vehicle, expressed her feelings of violation and anxiety stemming from the incident but acknowledged her gratitude towards Perry for his heroic actions. Although Perry deflects claims of heroism, he reflected on the experience with a sense of humour, noting that one of the youths dubbed him “Batman” due to his bat-wielding approach.

The young suspect is scheduled to appear in the Southport Children’s Court later this month, while the incident serves as a stark reminder of community vigilance in the face of crime.
