A family in Queensland has eliminated their electricity bills by installing innovative solar panels and battery technology. This system allows them to store surplus solar energy for use at night and during peak demand, and they have not yet needed to use their backup solar generator. Homeowner Helen expressed relief, noting they used to spend around $500 quarterly on electricity.
However, the setup of battery systems can be costly, ranging from $10,000 to $40,000. Payment plans are available, enabling homeowners to offset installation costs against their former electricity bills. There are also hybrid systems that allow properties to remain connected to the grid. While over 457,000 Queensland homes utilise solar power, many do not achieve complete self-sufficiency.
The Clean Energy Council believes that as battery prices continue to decline, more homeowners will be able to adopt this technology. Council representative Darren Gladman mentioned that in future, energy storage will become even more affordable.
