Queensland is currently facing a significant flood crisis in its south-west region, where several rivers have overflowed their banks. This disaster has raised concerns about potential losses in livestock, prompting graziers to evacuate their properties. Many towns in the area are experiencing rising water levels, particularly in Thargomindah, where local residents have sought refuge at the airport terminal, the highest ground available. Those who remained have been working tirelessly to reinforce flood levees around the town.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued various flood warnings, specifically for the Thomson River, Paroo River, and the Warrego River basin. Authorities are forecasting further rainfall, which may lead to floods exceeding levels seen in over 50 years, reminiscent of the catastrophic floods of 1974.

In response to this emergency, both federal and state governments have mobilised financial aid for the affected regions. Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements have been made available to councils including Barcoo, Boulia, Bulloo, Diamantina, Longreach, Quilpie, and Winton, to assist with recovery and cleanup efforts. Additionally, a fund of $2.5 million has been set up to provide fodder for affected livestock.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that all necessary resources would be made available, including support from the Australian Defence Force (ADF), which may assist in delivering aid where it’s needed most. With the ongoing threat of further flooding, the situation remains critical as communities work together to navigate the challenges ahead.
