Russian President Vladimir Putin has recently suggested initiating direct negotiations with Ukraine in Istanbul on Thursday, lifting the possibility of reaching a 30-day ceasefire as intense diplomatic pressure mounts from European leaders and the United States. In a rare late-night broadcast, Putin expressed the need for meetings to resume unconditionally, stating, “We would like to start immediately… where they were held before and where they were interrupted.”

Highlighting the seriousness of the discussions, he reiterated the aim to address the underlying issues of the conflict and achieve a lasting peace. This proposal has garnered backing from the White House following discussions with US President Donald Trump, who is also advocating for a ceasefire. However, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has made it clear that Russia remains resistant to external pressure, asserting that there are still significant concerns regarding the ceasefire proposal.

Putin’s suggestion comes amidst Ukraine’s continuous calls for a ceasefire, a stance supported by Kyiv’s primary European partners and the US. While Moscow has indicated a general openness to a ceasefire, it hasn’t committed outright, referring to various “nuances” that need clarification. Putin has denied claims of refusing dialogue with Kyiv, placing the decision in the hands of the Ukrainian authorities. He suggested that these talks could eventually lead to a new truce.

The Russian leader characterises such negotiations as steps toward establishing a stable peace rather than merely a means to continue military conflict. Throughout his discourse, he has emphasised the necessity of addressing what he describes as the “root causes” of the conflict, which include concerns over NATO’s eastward expansion.

In related developments, Trump voiced his frustration over Russia’s perceived delays concerning the ceasefire, warning that failure to respect it could result in further sanctions from the US and its allies. Peskov expressed gratitude for the US’s involvement in mediation but stressed the futility of attempting to apply pressure on Russia.

Overall, with the prospect of critical talks looming, the focus remains on how the international community can influence a resolution to a conflict that has persisted for three years, as various parties navigate their positions amid ongoing tensions.
