Russian President Vladimir Putin has highlighted that he has not engaged in in-depth discussions regarding the resolution of the Ukraine conflict with US President Donald Trump. This sentiment was mirrored in recent talks between Russian and American delegations in Saudi Arabia. In a statement broadcasted on state television, Putin also mentioned that Europe could play a role in any potential peace agreement.

On the same day, Trump expressed his belief that Putin might be open to the idea of European peacekeepers being involved in Ukraine as part of a settlement. Trump indicated he had posed this question directly to Putin during their communications.

Despite previous indications from top Russian officials rejecting the presence of Western forces in Ukraine, Trump noted during a press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron that open dialogues had resumed with Russia following his return to office. He remarked on the lack of communication that existed prior to his efforts in reaching out to Putin, asserting that he had been treated with respect and learned that there is a desire to end the hostilities.

Trump voiced his conviction that Putin is keen on striking a deal, although he acknowledged that he might be mistaken in this belief. Macron chimed in, supporting discussions between the US and Russian leaders, asserting the importance of dialogue, especially in the face of disagreements. However, he emphasised that any resolution must come with guarantees, rather than a mere ceasefire.

During the discussions, Macron reiterated the necessity for European countries to enhance their financial contributions to defence and security, potentially alleviating some of the burdens that have predominantly fallen on the US. He expressed admiration for the bravery of the Ukrainian people in their struggle against Russian aggression and underscored the shared goal of avoiding a world governed by might.

In summary, while the situation remains complex and fraught with tension, leaders are advocating for dialogue and potential cooperation in pursuit of a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
