Protests against Elon Musk, sparked by his role in the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under President Trump, unfolded at Tesla dealerships across the US and select cities in Europe on Saturday. Demonstrators aimed to challenge Musk’s influence and impact on government operations by targeting Tesla’s presence, amid claims he has accessed sensitive data and closed agencies to reduce spending.
Musk’s wealth, primarily derived from his Tesla stock, is estimated at $540 billion. Demonstrators gathered outside 277 Tesla locations, with participation ranging from dozens to hundreds in states including New Jersey, Texas, and Massachusetts. Signs displayed messages like “Honk if you hate Elon,” as the protests expanded nationwide, culminating in various cities and smaller communities.
Counter-protests were evident, with some supporters of Trump showing up at demonstrations. In California, one protest participant voiced concerns about a “fascist state” under Musk’s influence, highlighting the growing anti-Musk rhetoric. This sentiment extended to global protests, with approximately 230 events in other regions, reflecting a similar disdain towards the billionaire.
The events were part of the Tesla Takedown movement, organising through disillusioned Tesla owners and support from celebrities and politicians, including Representative Jasmine Crockett. Participants emphasised the need for peaceful action, although there were instances of vandalism linked to the protests—leading to charges of domestic terrorism. Some documented aggressive acts, such as attempts to set fire to Tesla vehicles, leading authorities to investigate.
In the face of criticism, Musk expressed confusion over the backlash, advocating for non-violent expressions. However, the unrest reflects deeper unhappiness among consumers who have begun to distance themselves from Tesla, expressing desires to sell or trade their vehicles.
Despite the turmoil, Musk remains optimistic about Tesla’s future, claiming the Model Y will continue to be a top-selling vehicle. He also anticipates record sales ahead, despite the stock’s decline amid investor fears regarding his governmental involvement and a slowdown in sales across major markets.
As the situation continues to evolve, analysts note that this presents a crucial period for Musk to navigate the ongoing backlash against his brand and leadership.
