A plan has been unveiled to rejuvenate Double Island, a neglected area off the Far North Queensland coast, with ambitions to turn it into a “tourism jewel” and generate hundreds of job opportunities. The Queensland government made this announcement today, indicating a search for tourism operators keen to revitalise the island.
This initiative follows a Land Court ruling from last year, which stripped a previous leaseholder, a Hong Kong billionaire, of his rights, resulting in the lease being returned to the government. Previously a popular getaway for tourists, including Hollywood stars, Double Island has fallen into disrepair over recent years.
Responding to community feedback, the state government aims to reinvigorate the local tourist industry ahead of the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. Natural Resources Minister Dale Last mentioned that the global commercial agency CBRE has been tasked with identifying a new leaseholder.
“The Crisafulli Government is committed to transforming Double Island into a vibrant tourism asset, creating numerous jobs in the Far North once again,” Last stated. He emphasised the significance of the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games, presenting a unique opportunity for a visionary operator to restore Double Island to its former glory.
An operator with innovative and ambitious plans is sought to unlock Double Island’s full potential and enhance its status as a premier destination in the region.
