Authorities in Sydney are investigating a suspected hate crime after popular drag queen Dan Varon Villamil, better known as Gothic Marika, was assaulted on Broughton Street in Milsons Point yesterday evening. Villamil, aged 26, shared footage of the incident on Instagram, revealing the confrontation began with the assailant yelling at him before knocking the phone from his hand.

According to New South Wales Police, the unknown assailant approached Villamil, made derogatory remarks and threatened violence if police were summoned. Following this verbal exchange, he allegedly threw a crate at Villamil and kicked him in the stomach, while also snatching the phone during the altercation.

After the incident, Villamil reassured his followers through another Instagram post, stating he was physically unharmed but emotionally shaken. He encouraged others to stay safe, travel in groups, and keep loved ones informed of their whereabouts. Despite police attending the scene, the attacker remains unidentified, and an investigation is ongoing. Villamil has reported the incident to the authorities as they work to ascertain the details surrounding the alleged assault.
