As the AFL and NRL seasons kick off, Super Rugby is nearing its conclusion, and preparations for the Nations Cup intensify. Joe Schmidt, the current Wallabies coach, aims to leave a strong legacy before Les Kiss takes over in August. Although World Rugby ranking points have less weight this year, the upcoming Nations Cup matches against Ireland, France, and Italy are still critical as the Wallabies strive for a successful conclusion to Schmidt’s tenure.
Schmidt’s coaching record shows a 39% win rate, and he could achieve a balanced 50% if the Wallabies remain unbeaten in their July home Tests, a notable contrast to Dave Rennie’s lower percentage. Schmidt faces selection challenges due to several players’ injuries and overseas commitments, leaving many positions uncertain as the initial Test date against Ireland approaches.
In particular, the fly-half position is wide open after Carter Gordon’s knee injury during a match against the Crusaders. Schmidt may consider Brumbies player Declan Meredith as a potential debutant. Other options include NRL recruit Zac Lomax, who impressed in his recent debut for the Force.
Schmidt’s anticipated lineup for the July 4 match against Ireland includes Angus Bell, Billy Pollard, and Allan Alaalatoa in the front row, alongside locks Nick Frost and Jeremy Williams. The back row is set to feature Rob Valetini, Fraser McReight, and captain Harry Wilson.
At halfback, Jake Gordon is poised to start, while Schmidt continues to monitor Ryan Lonergan’s performances. Should Gordon falter, Lonergan, known for his goal-kicking, could step up, especially if McDermott remains sidelined. In the fly-half slot, Gordon is expected to retain his spot if fit, despite competition from Tom Lynagh and Ben Donaldson.
Midfield selections may see Ikitau in the No. 12 jersey while Suaalii is likely to keep his place at outside centre. In the back three, Tom Wright’s upcoming return is eagerly anticipated, and the wings could see competition between Dylan Pietsch, Filipo Daugunu, and newcomers.
The predicted Wallabies team for the season opener against Ireland is: Angus Bell, Billy Pollard, Allan Alaalatoa, Nick Frost, Jeremy Williams, Rob Valetini, Fraser McReight, Harry Wilson (c), Jake Gordon, Carter Gordon, Max Jorgensen, Len Ikitau, Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, Dylan Pietsch, and Tom Wright. The potential replacements include Matt Faessler, Blake Schoupp, Taniela Tupou, Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, Charlie Cale, Tate McDermott, Tom Lynagh, and Filipo Daugunu.
Schmidt’s final months as Wallabies coach promise intense competition and vital decisions as he looks to cement his legacy before handing over to Kiss.
