Pro-Palestinian activists are poised to defy police warnings and conduct a march across the Sydney Harbour Bridge this weekend. Organised by the Palestine Action Group, the event aims to raise awareness regarding the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with plans to attract as many as 10,000 participants.

Authorities from NSW Police have expressed opposition to the gathering, arguing that it poses a risk to public safety. Acting Deputy Commissioner Peter McKenna stated that the police would not facilitate the protest but are willing to negotiate alternative routes and timings. Should the protesters insist on proceeding across the bridge, police indicated they would escalate the matter to the Supreme Court.

McKenna emphasized public safety as the primary concern, stating, “We cannot facilitate that public assembly this Sunday.” Despite these warnings, the Palestine Action Group remains resolute in its intentions to follow through with the demonstration. They cite the dire conditions in Gaza, including reports of starvation and a lack of essential supplies for infants, as motivating factors for their actions. The group noted a surge of support for the march that reflects a growing urgency regarding the situation.

In light of the police’s disapproval, some members within the Labor Party, including MPs and trade unions, have voiced their dissent against Premier Chris Minns’ opposition to the march. Minns had warned of potential chaos in Sydney if the protest moves forward, which has prompted concerns from various quarters, including upper house Labor MP Stephen Lawrence, who described the premier’s position as worrying.

The Palestine Action Group declares that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, exacerbated by Israel’s actions, necessitates urgent attention and action, reinforcing their commitment to proceeding with the march despite the prevailing tensions with law enforcement.
