Jo Haylen, the NSW Minister for Transport, has faced significant backlash after it was revealed that she utilised a ministerial driver for a private lunch at Brokenwood Winery on January 25. In response, she has apologised and announced her resignation from the portfolio.
Haylen acknowledged her mistakes, stating she did not violate any rules but recognised that this does not excuse her actions. She expressed regret over disappointing the public and admitted that her decisions have negatively impacted her government. Details emerged indicating that she had the driver transport her to her holiday home and later take her and other guests to lunch, resulting in a significant taxpayer-funded expense.
Although she plans to cover the $750 cost of the trip, further scrutiny has been raised about her driver’s usage, including taking her children to sports events. Premier Chris Minns condemned her actions as “indefensible,” yet initially refrained from dismissing her. Following her resignation, he announced policy adjustments to clarify the use of ministerial drivers, restricting them to official duties or incidental private use.
Haylen, who retains her position as the Member for Summer Hill, was appointed to her ministerial role following Labor’s election victory in March 2023 and has previously faced criticism over her administrative choices.
