New South Wales Premier Chris Minns has condemned the ongoing sick leave strike by train drivers and guards, labelling the actions of the rail union as “blackmail”. Following significant disruptions, including the cancellation of 335 train services, Transport for NSW reported that the network is still experiencing minimal delays. Commuters have been advised to avoid non-essential travel and seek alternative transport options amidst the chaos.

Heavy absenteeism among workers has led to nearly 1,525 train drivers and guards not reporting for shifts from Friday to Sunday, resulting in nearly 4,000 service interruptions. The disagreement stems from failed negotiations over an enterprise agreement, particularly regarding a disputed $4,500 sign-on bonus from the previous government, with both parties blaming each other for the breakdown.

Minns expressed incredulity at union claims that there was no organised strike and warned that conceding to their demands could lead to further industrial actions in the future. He stated that the matter would return to the Fair Work Commission, where he hopes for resolution, while also preparing contingency plans. The Transport Workers Union and the state remain at an impasse, continuing to impact Sydney’s public transport system.
