The Premier of Western Australia, Roger Cook, has expressed concerns over the recent presence of three Chinese naval vessels near the state’s coastline as they navigate around Australia. The Australian Defence Department reported that the warships, comprising a frigate, a missile cruiser, and a replenishment ship, are currently located approximately 170 nautical miles (314 km) southeast of Perth.

Cook has called for a stronger naval presence in the region, particularly emphasizing the need for more surface warships on the west coast. The Chinese vessels have been making their way westward after recently conducting live-fire exercises in the Tasman Sea last month, which has raised alarms about Australia’s naval preparedness. Notably, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) learned of these exercises only 30 minutes into their commencement, having been notified by civil aviation authorities after a Virgin Australia pilot diverted an aircraft due to a broadcast from the Chinese ships.

In response to criticisms of a lack of timely communication, Chinese officials have denied any failure to warn Australia about their military activities and have accused the Australian government of exaggerating the situation. As tensions have risen, the Australian Coalition government announced a significant investment of at least $3 billion to acquire an additional 28 F-35 advanced fighter jets to bolster national defence against China’s assertive military stance.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, while remaining tight-lipped on certain details—such as whether the foreign minister of Papua New Guinea was informed about the live-fire exercises two weeks prior—confirmed that the Australian and New Zealand naval and air forces have been monitoring the Chinese fleet throughout their journey. The Defence Department stated it would continue to keep a close eye on the Chinese task group as it approaches Australian maritime boundaries.
