The NSW Waratahs have revived their fortunes in Super Rugby Pacific, aiming to establish themselves as a dominant force just a year after finishing with the wooden spoon. They secured a convincing 34-10 victory over the Western Force in Sydney, thanks in part to a standout performance by Max Jorgensen, who scored twice.
Under the guidance of new coach Dan McKellar, the Waratahs have started the season strongly, boasting a 3-0 record and sitting second on the ladder despite having already had a bye week. This season’s performance marks an improvement over last year’s injury-plagued campaign, where the Waratahs managed only two wins out of 14 matches.
Angus Bell, a prop for the Waratahs, expressed optimism about the team’s potential, stating, “The exciting thing is the potential we have in this team to be a dominant force.” He highlighted that, while they’ve made progress, there’s still room for improvement.
McKellar acknowledged that while the team’s recent performances have been strong, consistency is key. Following the match, he remarked on the physicality and expansive play displayed by the Waratahs.
Jorgensen, who has stepped up in the absence of injured Wallabies star Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, impressed again, showcasing his talent with his scoring and assist for Darby Lancaster’s try. Bell praised Jorgensen’s dedication, stating, “His individual brilliance is awesome,” and noted his humility and hard work.
The Waratahs will next face the Queensland Reds in Brisbane, a match expected to add excitement to the ongoing rivalry between the two sides. McKellar is mindful of some injury concerns but remains hopeful that the players will recover in time for the upcoming clash.
In contrast, the Western Force faced a disappointing defeat to the Waratahs in the Super Rugby Women’s season after leading until the final moments, only to concede a try and lose 26-21.
As the Waratahs continue their campaign, fans are hopeful for a competitive and thrilling season ahead.
