Former Wallabies halfback Nick Phipps has endorsed Les Kiss as the leading candidate to succeed Joe Schmidt as Australia’s head coach, suggesting that Michael Cheika’s chances for a return have been hampered by the recent Eddie Jones controversy. Following Queensland’s convincing 35-15 victory over NSW, Kiss confirmed discussions with Rugby Australia regarding the coaching position, as Schmidt prepares to step down after the Rugby Championship in October to spend more time with his family.

Kiss’s potential appointment would mark a significant achievement in his coaching career, particularly after his successful playing tenure with the North Sydney Bears, Queensland, and Australia in rugby league. Phipps, who played 72 Tests for Australia and was coached by Kiss at London Irish, praised Kiss’s coaching approach, highlighting the skill and fluidity exhibited in a try by Fraser McReight during a recent match. Phipps described this moment as “peak Les Kiss,” emphasising the importance of player movement and strategic play.

Kiss, known for his emotionally intelligent and personable coaching style, has previously worked alongside Schmidt in Ireland. Phipps advocated for Kiss’s appointment, noting his credentials and success within the international arena, and expressed confidence in the potential for Queensland to be a formidable force under Kiss’s guidance.

Meanwhile, former Wallabies back Morgan Turinui also supported Kiss’s candidacy but raised questions about Cheika’s absence from current discussions. Cheika is available for a return after his tenure with Leicester Tigers, during which he led both the Waratahs to a Super Rugby title in 2014 and the Wallabies to a World Cup final in 2015. Phipps noted Cheika’s impressive record but suggested that the aftermath of the 2019 World Cup exit and the appointment of Eddie Jones may have clouded opinions on his return.

Turinui pointed out that selecting a coach straight from Super Rugby, such as Kiss, McKellar, or Larkham, without prior successful international experience differs from the trajectories of past Wallabies coaches. He argued that while Cheika’s extensive experience makes him a strong contender, the focus appears to be on continuity rather than a complete overhaul. This consideration comes as Rugby Australia navigates the sensitive dynamics of the coaching landscape ahead of the 2025 World Cup.

The competition for the Wallabies’ coaching role remains open, with a selection panel comprising key figures from Rugby Australia set to make the final decision. As the future of Australian rugby coaching unfolds, Kiss seems to be in the spotlight, with several advocates believing in his capability to lead the national team effectively.
