Australia Post has initiated a new safety protocol for its delivery workforce, equipping postal workers with citronella spray to address the alarming increase in dog attack incidents. Recent statistics reveal that, over the past six months, postal employees have encountered an average of 44 dog attacks each week, which amounts to approximately nine attacks daily.

Despite the company’s efforts to urge dog owners to securely confine their pets during delivery times, Australia Post identified the need for a protective deterrent for its staff. The non-harmful, water-based citronella spray has been trialed and shown to be approximately 80% effective in distracting aggressive dogs, providing postal workers with a critical opportunity to escape potential harm.

Russell Munro, Australia Post’s general manager of safety, emphasised the organisation’s commitment to safeguarding its frontline employees from both physical and psychological injuries. He highlighted the ongoing challenges posed by high rates of dog-related incidents despite public education initiatives and stringent safety measures. Munro reinforced the importance of responsible dog ownership, recommending that owners keep their pets securely locked away when deliveries are made.

It is notable that nearly 40% of dog attacks occur on private properties, with half happening when a door opens for a delivery. Certain areas, such as Moree in northern New South Wales, have become particularly problematic due to rampant and unrestrained dogs, creating hazardous environments for delivery personnel.

In response to these concerns, Australia Post plans to distribute the citronella spray starting with high-risk locations, ensuring all postal workers are equipped by late July. Delivery staff will also receive training on the safe and responsible use of the spray, which will be reserved for situations that warrant its application as a last resort.

This proactive approach marks a significant step in addressing the safety of postal workers against rising dog attacks while also fostering responsible pet ownership within the community.
