Daly Cherry-Evans’ departure from Queensland’s State of Origin team seems imminent, given the veteran’s 36 years. His tenure has been marked by 25 appearances and two tries since his debut in 2013. As the 15th captain of the Maroons, he has led the team to victory in the shield three times since taking on the role in 2019. However, with Cherry-Evans’ retirement on the horizon, the team must prepare for life without him.

Emerging talents like Sam Walker and Tom Dearden are being touted as potential replacements in the halves moving forward. Other contenders include Braydon Trindall, Ben Hunt, and Jamal Fogarty, who could step in for the 2025 season if Cherry-Evans makes himself unavailable. Recent performances have also put Jaxon Purdue on the radar, despite his team’s struggles against Manly; his efforts alongside Dearden demonstrate a promising partnership that could benefit Queensland.

Cherry-Evans expressed confidence in the next generation, especially in relation to the Cowboys pairing of Dearden and Purdue. He highlighted Dearden’s impressive form and assured that they would keep Queensland competitive in the future. Cherry-Evans remarked, “Tommy, in particular, over the last month has been fantastic. I’m sure he’s going to be a part of the Queensland side for a long time.” He also sees great potential in Jaxon, noting, “Based on what I’ve seen, I’m sure he has a long future ahead.”

In essence, while Cherry-Evans’ leadership and experience will be missed, there are promising young players ready to take up the mantle in the Maroons’ halves. As Queensland prepares for this transition, the future looks bright with the emerging talent stepping into the crucial roles.
