The Mother’s Day Classic, occurring this Sunday across Australia, aims to raise essential funds for cancer research while promoting awareness of women’s health. This event features various fun runs and walks, with hopes of exceeding last year’s fundraising total of nearly $4 million.

Ali Clarke, a cancer survivor and advocate for the event, has teamed up with her mother, Mary Carle, to encourage involvement and emphasise the significance of early detection. Clarke shared her journey with cancer, noting that disclosing her diagnosis to her mother was particularly difficult. She expressed a desire to shield her family from worry, emphasising the necessity of honesty in communicating her health situation.

Now recovered, Clarke sees the cause as a collective effort rather than a personal one, stating, “It’s not about me, it’s about everyone who will go through it, everyone who has already faced it, and we definitely need more funding for research.” Mary shared her thoughts on her daughter’s experience, regretting that Ali had to endure the illness but also recognising her strength in recovery and her commitment to helping others.

In addition to fundraising efforts, the Mother’s Day Classic serves as a reminder for women, especially mothers, to prioritise their health. Clarke pointed out a common tendency amongst women to care for others while neglecting their own well-being, even going so far as to have their cars serviced before attending to their health. She highlighted the critical nature of early detection, encouraging women to undergo regular mammograms to address potential health issues proactively.

For those unable to participate in Sunday’s events, organisers have arranged an alternative option. Participants can complete their walk or run on a different day, in any location, while still contributing to the vital fundraising endeavours. The event is not only a celebration of Mother’s Day but also a crucial reminder of the importance of health awareness and community support in the fight against cancer.
