Pope Leo XIV, the first pontiff born in the United States, expressed that his election is both a challenge and a gift during his inaugural Mass in the Sistine Chapel, where he addressed the cardinals who elected him. With a commitment to social justice reminiscent of his predecessor, Pope Francis, he outlined his vision for the Church to spread Christianity joyfully, even in a world that often scoffs at it.

In his homily, Leo underscored the heavy burden of leadership bestowed upon him and the importance of unity among believers. He stated his reliance on the cardinals to collaboratively announce the Gospel, signifying an intent to foster community within the Church.

Leo, originally Robert Prevost, an Augustinian missionary from Chicago, overcame the historical reluctance to elect a U.S. pontiff. His formal installation will take place on May 18, with his first general audience scheduled for May 21. In another progressive move, women delivered the scripture readings during Mass, hinting at Leo’s mission to further women’s roles in the Church—an agenda he embraced even as a cardinal.

He lamented the prevailing perception of Christianity as irrelevant, citing that even among many Christians, faith can sometimes dwindle to mere indifference. He highlighted that this spiritual vacuum leads to societal issues, such as a loss of meaning and detrimental violations of human rights.

The cardinals applauded after the Mass, where Leo notably opted for simple black shoes, departing from traditional red papal loafers. Following his election, he requested the current Vatican leaders, whose terms lapsed with Francis’s death, to stay on until he confirms their positions.

Pope Francis viewed Prevost as a successor, previously appointing him to significant roles, including heading the powerful Dicastery for Bishops. Prevost’s election signifies continuity with Francis’s reform-oriented agenda, particularly addressing social justice and enhancing inclusivity within the Catholic Church. Observers suggest that Leo’s leadership may bridge the divide within American Catholicism, which has faced considerable polarization.

Leo’s family members describe him as a compassionate individual, dedicated to helping the less fortunate, with expectations that his papacy will mirror the kindness demonstrated by Francis. His early activities post-election included reconnecting with colleagues and preparing for upcoming public engagements. His first blessing will be given from St. Peter’s Basilica’s loggia, with a potential foreign trip planned later, marking another step in establishing his papal presence.

With a commitment to healing the Church’s divisions, Leo XIV stands poised to lead a new chapter, drawing from the legacies of past popes while embracing the ever-changing landscape of modern Catholicism.
