Pope Francis, currently in hospital for over a week due to pneumonia, is reported to be in a “critical” condition after experiencing an “asthmatic respiratory crisis.” Despite being alert and spending time in an armchair, he is reportedly feeling more pain than the previous day. To address anaemia, he has received blood transfusions.

As the pontiff continues his recovery, he will remain hospitalised and will not lead the weekly Angelus prayer, marking only the third such absence in nearly 12 years as pope. Although earlier this week his condition appeared stable, medical experts caution that he is not out of danger. Surgeon Sergio Alfieri indicated that while immediate death is not a risk, the treatment requires time.

Initially admitted for tests on February 14, the pope was later diagnosed with pneumonia affecting both lungs; he is particularly susceptible to respiratory issues following a serious bout of pneumonia in his youth that resulted in part of his lung being removed. His past medical history includes surgeries related to diverticulitis and bronchitis and he has recently experienced falls, resulting in minor injuries.

While advised to rest, Pope Francis has remained engaged with his duties, including conference calls with associates in Gaza. Supporters around the world are holding vigils and praying for his swift recovery, expressing their hope for his continued leadership and well-being.
