Pope Francis’ medical journey took a tense turn when his healthcare team faced a critical decision during a severe breathing crisis on February 28. Alongside treating physicians, Dr. Sergio Alfieri reported that the 88-year-old Pope was in a precarious state, making the possibility of survival seem bleak. During this bronchospasm episode, he was at risk of inhaling vomit, significantly worsening his condition.

Dr. Alfieri shared that the team had to decide whether to continue treatment, which could potentially harm his organs, or to halt it altogether. Ultimately, they opted for a risky yet aggressive treatment approach aimed at combating his severe respiratory issues. Alfieri noted that both the Pope and those close to him were aware of the gravity of the situation that night, with the pontiff’s health assistant urging them to explore every possible treatment option.

This decision turned out to be pivotal. The Pope underwent 38 days of treatment for double pneumonia, culminating in his release on a Sunday. Upon discharge, he appeared frail and weak as he greeted supporters outside the Gemelli hospital. Following medical advice, the Pope is expected to rest for two months, steering clear of large group gatherings, although it remains uncertain whether he will participate in any Holy Week ceremonies leading up to Easter on April 20. A planned meeting with King Charles III has also been postponed to ensure the Pope’s recovery.

Dr. Alfieri detailed that despite the severe bronchospasms, the Pope remained conscious and engaged throughout the ordeal. The team employed innovative methods, using cameras and other tools to clear his airways effectively. While there were serious concerns regarding the implications of continued treatment on the Pope’s kidney and bone health, it ultimately yielded positive results, with the lung infection showing signs of improvement.

Interestingly, Alfieri suggested that the widespread prayers for the Pope played a role in his recovery—a sentiment echoed by his medical team, who noted that the Pope’s cooperation during treatment was admirable. He mentioned that there were two separate moments when hope seemed lost, but the Pope’s condition improved remarkably, leading them to attribute his recovery to both medical intervention and global faith.

This saga illustrates not just the fragility of the Pope’s health but also the profound impact of collective hope and skilled medical care in the face of life-threatening challenges.
