Pope Francis is currently in Rome’s Gemelli hospital, where he has been treated for pneumonia affecting both lungs, in addition to a complex respiratory infection involving bacterial, viral, and fungal elements. While his condition is serious, medical professionals indicated it is not life-threatening, although he is still not out of danger. His medical team confirmed he will remain in the hospital at least through next week.

The Pontiff, who just celebrated his 88th birthday, has been receiving occasional oxygen supplements and shows a positive response to enhanced drug therapy. Doctors noted that there is no evidence of the infection spreading to his bloodstream—a concern known as sepsis.

Despite health challenges, including a history of respiratory infections and limited mobility from knee issues, Francis remains engaged with his duties, continuing to make episcopal appointments while maintaining a sense of humour during his treatment. Speculation regarding his potential resignation has emerged, particularly in light of Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline’s statement that “everything is possible,” and discussions sparked by Francis’ own acknowledgment of writing a resignation letter shortly after becoming pope. Nevertheless, there are no indications that he is currently considering stepping down, as he remains committed to his role as spiritual leader to Catholics worldwide, supported by fervent prayers from the faithful, especially in countries close to his heart.
