Pope Francis is currently stable and in “good humour” following a recent coughing episode while reading. According to the Vatican’s latest update, the 88-year-old pontiff is recovering from double pneumonia and no longer has a fever.
The Vatican reported that the pope is alternating between non-invasive mechanical ventilation and high-flow oxygen supplements, responding well to treatment. He has not experienced any fever or high white blood cell counts, indicating no significant infections.
The worrying coughing fit, during which he inhaled vomit that required extraction, led to the need for noninvasive ventilation. However, since that incident, he has not suffered any further coughing episodes. Unlike a previous respiratory crisis he faced in February, this current episode does not seem to be causing the same level of discomfort.
Pope Francis’s vital signs have remained stable, and he is eating independently while actively participating in his respiratory physiotherapy sessions. He recently received the Eucharist and spent time in prayer, indicating his continued engagement with his faith and duties.
Despite the recent challenges to his health, Vatican officials maintain that the pope is in good spirits. However, they caution that his prognosis remains guarded as he continues his recovery.
