Pope Francis remains in a critical state as he battles pneumonia and a complex lung infection at the age of 88. Reports indicate that he is alert and responsive, attending Mass despite experiencing early signs of kidney failure. The Vatican confirmed that there have been no further respiratory issues since Saturday night, although he continues to receive high flows of supplemental oxygen.

Medical professionals have noted initial, mild kidney failure but have stated that it is under control. They describe the pontiff’s situation as precarious, acknowledging his fragility due to age and pre-existing health conditions. Prayers and expressions of concern for his health have emerged from around the globe, including from Argentina, the heart of Sunni Islam in Cairo, and schoolchildren in Rome.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York expressed the gravity of the situation, indicating that many within the Church view Francis as nearing the end of his life, though he remains hopeful for recovery. The pontiff was unable to preside over Sunday Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, where Archbishop Rino Fisichella led the service in his stead, offering prayers for Francis while noting his enduring presence despite his hospitalisation.

Furthermore, the pope had prepared a written address for the occasion, mentioning his ongoing treatment and the significance of the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, calling it a “painful and shameful occasion for humanity.” Vigils and prayers have taken place not only at the Vatican but also across Argentina, where the Buenos Aires cathedral lit up in his honour, and in Cairo, where prominent Muslim leaders offered well-wishes.

As Francis’s condition progresses, the primary concern for doctors remains the potential onset of sepsis, a serious complication of pneumonia. Recent health updates revealed stable yet low platelet counts and ongoing treatments for anaemia, contributing to his complex medical picture. Francis has had a history of chronic lung ailments and was hospitalised following a severe bout of bronchitis on February 14.

Amid these health challenges, the pope has made recent decisions indicating awareness of his declining health, including changes to funeral rites and adjustments in the College of Cardinals. His actions reflect an understanding of the succession planning necessary for the Church as he navigates this difficult period.
