Thousands of individuals gathered in St Peter’s Square, united in prayer for Pope Francis, who is currently battling pneumonia in both lungs. The 88-year-old pontiff remains in a critical state but has shown a slight improvement after more than eleven days in hospital. Reports from the Vatican shared a hopeful update, noting the pope had a restful night.

During a prayer service led by Cardinal Pietro Parolin on a chilly, rainy evening, around 4,000 faithful attended, many holding rosary beads, reflecting on Francis’ contributions to the Catholic Church while hoping for his recovery. The atmosphere, however, was marked by sombreness, as many attendees contemplated the possibility of witnessing Francis’ final days.

Local seminarian Robert Pietro expressed deep sorrow over the pope’s suffering, acknowledging a dual sense of grief and gratitude for his efforts within the Church. Similar sentiments were echoed by Reverend Roberto Allison from Mexico, whose community came in gratitude for the teachings they have received from Francis.

Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, concluding the service with personal blessings, highlighted the diverse gathering, which included many languages, as a meaningful show of unity within the Catholic Church. Known for his advocacy on various issues including the environment and LGBTQ+ rights, Pope Francis has been hospitalised since February 14. Doctors remain cautious about his health due to his age and pre-existing lung conditions.

While there has been slight good news regarding the pope’s health, with no recent respiratory crises and adjustments to his supplemental oxygen, the mood amongst visitors remains reflective. Some tourists, upon learning they might be present in Rome for historic moments, shared their mixed emotions about the pope’s condition.

Elisabetta Zumbo, leading a group of pilgrims from Italy, expressed the emotional weight felt by many, reiterating their commitment to pray for the pope. Visitors from outside the Catholic faith also shared feelings of closeness to the pontiff during their visit to St Peter’s Basilica, underscoring the pope’s widespread impact.

As the city of Rome joins in earnest prayers for the Pope’s health, people from diverse backgrounds have come together, showcasing a collective hope for his recovery and greater appreciation for his leadership throughout his papacy.
