Pope Francis remains hospitalised for a complex lung infection and early-stage kidney insufficiency, marking the tenth day of his stay. The Vatican confirmed that the 88-year-old pontiff is responsive and in good spirits, continuing to eat independently without the need for artificial nutrition.

Medical updates indicate that while his condition is critical, there have been no further respiratory crises since Saturday. Doctors have reported slight kidney insufficiency, which is being monitored, with blood tests showing various health markers are under control. He is receiving high-flow supplemental oxygen due to pneumonia affecting both lungs. While his prognosis remains guarded, pope has reportedly attended Mass and appears alert and responsive.

This hospitalisation is the longest Pope Francis has experienced during his papacy, surpassing a previous stay when he underwent surgery to remove part of his colon in 2021. Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s second-in-command, is expected to lead a prayer service in St Peter’s Square later today.

On a poignant note, Cardinal Timothy Dolan in New York spoke candidly about the gravity of the Pope’s health, stating that many church leaders are united in prayer at what they feel may be a critical moment for the Pope, expressing concern over his fragile state. He emphasised the uncertainty surrounding what the future may hold for the Pope concerning his capacity to continue in his role.

Despite the somber updates, no indications of severe complications like sepsis have been reported, which is often a serious risk associated with pneumonia. The community remains hopeful, but the Pope’s health has prompted renewed discussions about his potential incapacitation and the implications for his papacy.
