A coordinated investigation by the Australian Federal Police, the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, and Victoria Police has made significant progress in the case surrounding the firebombing of the Adass Israel Synagogue in Ripponlea on December 6 of the previous year. The authorities have identified links between this incident and other violent crimes, highlighting the involvement of a blue 2020 VW Golf sedan, which was also implicated in an arson at Lux nightclub in South Yarra and a separate arson and shooting in Bundoora, both occurring on the same day as the synagogue attack.
Assistant Commissioner Tess Walsh of Victoria Police’s Counter Terrorism Command emphasised the critical role of the blue Golf in the investigation, revealed to be a stolen vehicle registered under cloned number plates. Video footage has been released showing the sedan circling the synagogue several times and parking outside before three masked individuals emerged. These suspects were observed using an axe to damage the synagogue’s entrance, followed by at least two others pouring liquid from red jerry cans inside, which they subsequently ignited.
In light of these findings, police are treating the attack as politically motivated and have reassured the Jewish community of their commitment to identifying and prosecuting those responsible. The authorities are appealing for public assistance, urging anyone with information related to the vehicle or its occupants to come forward. They believe that there may be several individuals, potentially violent offenders, connected to the synagogue attack.
Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Stephen Nutt warned those involved that the repercussions of terrorism can lead to life imprisonment. He stressed that it is only a matter of time before police action is taken, advising those with knowledge of the events to step forward voluntarily. The ongoing investigations into the Lux nightclub and Bundoora incidents are being conducted separately and are not regarded as politically motivated.
With these developments, investigators remain optimistic about progress in the case. They are keenly aware of the community’s potential role in gathering crucial information and have urged anyone with insights to provide assistance to help bring the offenders to justice.
