On Sunday, April 5, around 5:50 AM, police attended to reports regarding a woman who had stopped breathing near Barkly Homestead on the Barkly Highway, in the Avon Downs district. It was reported that the vehicle she was in had collided with a kangaroo. Tragically, a 27-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. In connection with this incident, a 33-year-old man was taken into custody shortly after.
Authorities suspect that the man and woman, believed to be in a relationship, were parked in a dark-coloured Jeep Cherokee beside the intersection of the Barkly and Tablelands Highways during the early hours of that Sunday, from 1:30 AM until 5:30 AM. Reports indicate that they had driven from Gympie in Queensland to Barkly Homestead, possibly passing through locations such as Ban Ban Springs, Emerald, Winton, Cloncurry, Mount Isa, and Camooweal along the way.
The police are actively seeking help from the public for any information or dashcam footage taken by motorists who might have been in the area during this period. They are particularly interested in any sightings of the Jeep Cherokee involved. Individuals with relevant information are encouraged to contact the police or to make an anonymous report through Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
In a final note, the authorities have appealed for anyone with additional details regarding the incident to come forward, adding a reminder for the community to stay informed and engaged with breaking news updates across all platforms.
