Authorities in Toowoomba, Queensland, are investigating a tragic house fire that resulted in the deaths of three children. The incident occurred in the Harristown area around 12:30 am on Wednesday, when flames engulfed the residence that housed seven individuals, including a 34-year-old man, a 36-year-old woman, and five children. Fortunately, the adults and four of the children managed to escape just before firefighters arrived to extinguish the blaze.
Regrettably, a nine-year-old boy was discovered deceased within the home, while two girls, aged four and seven, succumbed to their injuries later in hospital. The children’s mother remains in critical condition at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, under police supervision. Due to her condition, she has not yet been able to provide a statement to investigators.
In response to the severity of the situation, police have expanded their investigation. Forensic teams, along with officers from the drug squad, are examining the scene for potential evidence. Authorities are particularly focused on whether the children were deliberately doused with an accelerant prior to the fire being ignited.
As the community mourns the loss of these young lives, floral tributes have begun to appear outside the home where the tragedy occurred. The local school attended by the deceased children has issued a statement offering counselling support for affected students and staff, underscoring the widespread impact of this devastating event.
The investigation continues as police seek to piece together the circumstances surrounding this horrific incident.
