In response to rising retail theft and escalating knife crime, police presence in Werribee—a hotspot in Melbourne’s west—is set to increase significantly over the coming weeks. This initiative comes during the school holidays, with officers deployed to shopping centres and transport hubs to enhance security.

Law enforcement will primarily focus on locating weapons, drugs, and addressing gang-related activities, while also extending support to local businesses that are struggling with an uptick in violent retail thefts. Local traders have expressed their frustration to 9News, with one business owner, Ori Salvalaggio, describing the situation as reaching a “crescendo” due to frequent thefts and drug use.

Many retailers are considering hiring private security to patrol their premises overnight, as the existing police response may not suffice. Salvalaggio highlighted concerns about the potential emergence of vigilante groups, signalling a community that feels overshadowed by crime and inadequate measures from authorities.

In light of two recent stabbings in Wyndham Vale, Senior Sergeant Nathan Gardiner emphasised the operation’s goal is to restore a sense of safety among residents. Increased police visibility is aimed at reassuring the community and fostering a safer environment.

Overall, the initiative reflects growing concern among business owners and residents alike, who are eager to see effective action taken to combat crime in their neighbourhood.
