A tragic shooting incident in North Motton, Tasmania, has resulted in the death of a police officer. Around 11am, the officer was responding to a call at a rural property on Allison Road, approximately 28 kilometres from Devonport, when they were allegedly shot by a member of the public.
In the aftermath, another police officer returned fire at the alleged shooter, leaving them injured. Despite efforts to save them, the officer succumbed to their critical injuries at the scene.
Authorities have set up a crime scene and confirmed that there is no immediate threat to the local community. Police presence in the area continues as they investigate the incident.
Tasmania Police described the situation as “traumatic” and reassured that support for the wellbeing of those affected is being made available. They also stated that a comprehensive investigation by the Professional Standards team is already in progress, as is standard procedure for serious incidents involving police personnel.
