A $100,000 fuel giveaway at a petrol station in Truganina, Melbourne, was abruptly halted by police due to severe traffic disruptions. The promotional event, organised by entrepreneur Billy Beasley, drew enormous crowds of drivers eager to claim complimentary petrol, leading to chaotic scenes as cars lined up for blocks.

The giveaway, which was structured as a first-come, first-served opportunity, resulted in a bumper-to-bumper traffic situation on Leakes Road. As excited motorists flocked to the Liberty fuel station early on Good Friday, some vehicles ran out of fuel while waiting in line, prompting one distressed driver to push his car towards the pumps.

Despite the pandemonium, Beasley, who is also behind the rebate scheme RS Rewards, stated that his intention was to provide assistance amidst rising fuel prices. However, he admitted the event had spiralled beyond expectations, saying future initiatives would require better planning.

Police arrived around 7:30 am to manage the chaos and ultimately shut down the giveaway within an hour of its start. During the short-lived promotion, it is estimated that approximately $70,000 worth of fuel was dispensed, alongside an additional $50,000 in fuel cards that the team distributed to ensure that attendees left with something despite the abrupt end.

As the situation settled, many drivers left without any fuel, while Beasley expressed his resolve to learn from the experience. The day’s events not only highlighted the high demand for fuel relief but also illustrated the potential pitfalls of promotional schemes that, if not managed properly, can result in public disorder.

In response to the rising fuel costs, there are alternative incentives for motorists. The AFL announced a forthcoming increase in their Shell Reddy Express discount from 4 cents per litre to 10 cents per litre next week, available via the AFL app.

As the community grapples with fuel prices, the dramatic scenes at the fuel giveaway serve as a reminder of the lengths to which individuals might go to alleviate financial strain at the pump.
