Authorities in Melbourne have dismantled a suspected shoplifting ring, leading to the arrest of 19 individuals allegedly involved in stealing goods worth over $10 million. The group, primarily made up of Indian nationals holding temporary visas, has been accused of targeting well-known supermarket chains across the metropolitan area over the last five months.
The stolen items included high-demand products such as baby formula, medicines, skincare items, vitamins, and toiletries. Victims of this alleged crime include significant retailers who were impacted by the systematic theft of these goods. Among those detained, the suspects—a mix of six men and one woman aged between 21 and 54—are believed to be involved in thefts ranging from $25,000 to $136,000 each.
Police are alleging that this syndicate operates as part of a broader network, effectively distributing the stolen items to various sellers. Detective Acting Inspector Rachele Ciavarella emphasised the scale of the operation, stating it represents one of the most significant efforts against organised retail theft in recent times.
The arrested individuals are expected to appear in court in the coming months. Law enforcement has expressed a commitment to continue tackling retail crime, highlighting collaborations with major retailers to develop intelligence that assists in capturing offenders swiftly.
Detective Ciavarella made it clear that the police would vigorously pursue those targeting the retail sector, stating, “Our message is simple: if you target our retail sector, we will target you.” Overall, this operation reflects an ongoing mission to combat retail crime and protect businesses in Melbourne.
