Authorities in Perth’s northern suburbs have conducted a raid on an alleged illegal gambling operation, seizing tens of thousands of dollars as part of a broader initiative to dismantle clandestine casinos operating from private residences.

Police executed the raid in Marangaroo, surprising a group of 18 individuals engaged in a baccarat game. The operation not only disrupted their activities but also highlighted the transformation of the home’s dining area into a makeshift casino. The authorities seized approximately $83,000 in cash and various gambling paraphernalia during the bust.

According to Police Minister Reece Whitby, the crackdown specifically targets unlicensed gambling operations masquerading as friendly gatherings, such as poker nights with friends. The minister emphasised the serious nature of these operations, which are conducted for profit rather than casual gaming.

Gaming Minister Paul Papalia warned those involved—such as the alleged dealer, a former employee of Crown Perth—that engaging in such activities could lead to severe consequences, including the loss of their gaming licence and possible linkages to organised crime. The police are particularly concerned about the infiltration of criminal networks into these gambling dens.

This latest operation marks the fourth such raid this year, following previous raids that have resulted in the loss of three casino dealers’ licences and an overall seizure of around $300,000 in illicit gambling funds. Crown Resorts has stated its commitment to supporting law enforcement in combating illegal gaming and maintaining integrity in the gaming industry.

While formal charges have not yet been announced, law enforcement’s determination to address the growing concern of organised crime influencing these unlawful enterprises remains steadfast.
