Transport NSW has alerted commuters to expect significant disruptions today, as the renowned Sydney Harbour Bridge will be closed for several hours due to a pro-Palestinian rally. The bridge will be inaccessible to traffic from 11:30 am until 4:00 pm, with authorities advising against non-essential travel because heavy delays are anticipated, particularly in the Harbour Tunnel, a major alternative route.

The Supreme Court has approved the protest organised by the Palestine Action Group, despite prior attempts by the NSW police commissioner to ban the event for safety concerns. A large police presence is expected, with officers moved from regular duties across the city to manage the situation. NSW Police Acting Deputy Commissioner Peter McKenna stressed the importance of compliance with police directions, urging participants to be respectful. While the force will facilitate lawful protests, they will take action against any anti-social behaviour that poses risks to public safety.

Simultaneously, a pro-Palestine demonstration is planned at Melbourne’s King Street Bridge. Authorities predict that thousands will gather in light of police requests to alter their route for emergency vehicle accessibility.

The march in Sydney is set to commence at the State Library at midday, with ongoing protests since October 7, 2023, demanding an immediate ceasefire in Israel and a withdrawal from Gaza, as well as urgent aid for the region. Premier Jacinta Allen has warned that any actions obstructing emergency services will face swift repercussions from police.
