Authorities in Auckland are investigating the sudden death of a man found near a motorway, where two devices identified as viable pipe bombs were located. The man’s body was discovered on a walkway adjacent to the Southern Motorway around midday yesterday. Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Hayward from the Counties Manukau CIB shared insights about the ongoing investigation.
The two improvised explosive devices were deemed capable of causing fatal injuries to anyone nearby, highlighting the potential danger they posed. Fortunately, specialist teams were able to safely handle and dispose of these devices. Hayward assured the public that there is no broader threat, alleviating safety concerns in the community.
A post-mortem examination of the deceased was underway, while a thorough examination of the scene was anticipated to conclude later that afternoon. Traffic on the southbound lanes of the Southern Motorway, specifically between Mount Wellington Highway and Highbrook Drive, experienced closures for several hours due to the incident.
Given the location’s proximity to a significant highway, Hayward noted the necessity of ensuring the area was secure before re-opening the roads. The investigation remains active as authorities delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death and the recovered devices.
