Three weeks after surviving a near-fatal stunt plane crash at Avalon, seasoned pilot Glenn Collins is defying the odds and is on the path to recovery. Following his critical condition post-accident, Collins’ team is gearing up for upcoming airshows and a heartfelt aerobatic tribute to honour him.
Friend and fellow pilot Paul Bennet has planned a special performance in the Central West of New South Wales next Sunday, which will serve as a tribute to Collins and send a loving message 900 kilometres away to Melbourne. Bennet expressed, “We’ll create a love heart in the air, dedicating it to Glenn and his family,” highlighting the camaraderie and warmth within the aviation community.
During the incident at the Avalon Airshow, Bennet was airborne with Collins. Reflecting on the crash, he noted a moment of confusion as they performed their routines. Collins suffered severe injuries to his spine and legs and was placed in an induced coma for a week. Remarkably, he has made significant progress, leading Bennet to declare, “He’s beaten the odds, and we’re thrilled about it.”
Currently, Collins is still in hospital but is showing hopeful signs on his road to recovery. “We all hope he gets back in a plane one day,” Bennet remarked, reinforcing the collective support and encouragement extended to Collins and his family during this challenging time.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, but the focus for Collins’ team remains on delivering a captivating performance. Bennet stated, “He wants us to keep going, almost like nothing ever happened.” This resolve demonstrates the enduring spirit of Collins, who has become a symbol of resilience in the face of adversity.
The planned tribute flight aims to honour not only Collins but also to celebrate the strong sense of community among pilots. “He’s truly pulled through a miracle, hasn’t he?” Bennet mused, encapsulating the gratitude and optimism shared by those who know Collins. The aviation community eagerly anticipates the upcoming aerial display, reinforcing bonds of friendship and support during difficult times.
