A landmark event is currently taking place at the Yours and Owls festival in Wollongong, marking the first trial of pill testing at a music festival in New South Wales (NSW). This initiative, run by health professionals from NSW Health, is set up in a designated area on festival grounds that offers legal protection for users seeking to test their substances.

NSW Health Minister Ryan Park has described this as a significant and historic moment. Festival organiser Ben Tillman emphasised the discreet nature of the testing process, noting that measures are in place to ensure attendees feel safe and are not faced with judgment or police presence while exiting the testing area.

Participants can bring their pills and powders to the clinic, where staff will photograph the items and conduct a small sample analysis. If harmful substances are detected, festival-goers will be alerted accordingly. NSW Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant highlighted the importance of immediate communication, recalling how alerts were successfully broadcast at a previous event, effectively halting festivities to safeguard attendees.

However, patrons face a complication: they must smuggle their drugs past police officers stationed at festival entrances. Sniffer dogs are also being deployed to increase security. Park acknowledged the contradiction inherent in the policy, recognising that while this testing initiative aims to reduce harm, drug use remains illegal in NSW.

The push for pill testing has gained momentum over the last decade, partly driven by the tragic deaths of at least ten young festival-goers due to drug overdoses, a situation that has prompted calls for reform from grieving families.

The current trial will continue for a full 12 months, with the festival taking place over two days. This pilot program aims to assess the efficacy of pill testing in enhancing the safety of event-goers and potentially shaping future drug policy in NSW.
