As discussions swirl about Nathan Cleary’s fitness for Origin III, attention is shifting to potential replacements. The most frequently mentioned candidates are Isaiya Katoa and Luke Metcalf, while a pairing of Jarome Luai and Matt Burton has also been suggested. However, Phil Gould believes that Adam Reynolds, currently playing in a northern NRL club, is the preferable option.
Reynolds has not donned the NSW jersey since 2016, having made just two appearances for the Blues. Yet, Gould argues that Reynolds’ extensive NRL experience positions him as the top contender should Cleary be unavailable. “If it were up to me, I’d choose Adam Reynolds without hesitation,” he stated on Nine’s program, 100% Footy. He underscored Reynolds’ strengths in game management, kicking, and goal-kicking, emphasising that the team would benefit immensely from his skills.
Gould’s comments come in light of Cleary’s recent struggles with a groin injury during Origin II, where he was unable to kick effectively or contribute significantly until later in the match. Additionally, Mitchell Moses suffered a calf injury in training, ruling him out of the same match. Hence, the selection of a reliable, seasoned player like Reynolds could provide essential stability in what is expected to be a crucial deciding match for the series.
