The South Australian government is exploring an initiative to ease the strain on general practitioners by enabling pharmacists to manage a broader array of health issues. This proposal includes additional training for pharmacists to allow them to prescribe medications for conditions such as skin disorders, ear infections, and gastro-related issues, building on earlier changes that permitted them to treat urinary tract infections and contraceptive prescriptions.
Health Minister Chris Picton emphasised the importance of optimising the skills of healthcare professionals to enhance patient care for South Australians facing GP accessibility challenges. However, concerns have been raised by the Australian Medical Association (AMA) regarding the potential risks involved in expanding the prescribing authority of pharmacists. Dr John Williams from the AMA mentioned issues like misdiagnosis, inappropriate prescriptions, and the risk of increasing antibiotic resistance.
The implementation of this proposed program is anticipated to begin in 2026, signifying a significant shift in the role of pharmacists within the healthcare system in South Australia.
