Peter V’landys, the head of the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC), has announced that a new agreement is in the works aimed at securing the NRL’s ongoing rugby league festival in Las Vegas. Currently, the NRL has a five-year contract which supports the expansion of rugby league in the US market, with this event and its associated fan festival set to run until 2028.

Following the strong reception of the festival in its second year, there are calls for the NRL to consider broadening the event further. V’landys affirmed that stakeholders in Las Vegas are eager for the NRL to extend its tenure for an additional decade, highlighting the significant economic benefits generated. He revealed that the initiative has stimulated the Vegas economy by approximately $100 million, with nearly 17,000 Australians, 8,000 New Zealanders, and 10,000 visitors from England attending this year’s festivities.

With a focus on enhancing the event, V’landys has indicated plans to seek increased sponsorship for next year’s activities, which will now include a Super League match and a women’s Test. He humourously remarked that their sponsorship fee might see a substantial hike, suggesting that partners might have to offer up more than usual due to the event’s success.

V’landys expressed confidence in the league’s trajectory, noting that this year’s insights and experiences have been invaluable. He stated that experts in sports management have provided the league with guidance on effectively breaking into the American market, boosting his confidence in making a significant impact by the fifth year of the initiative.

Reflecting on the achievements thus far, V’landys conveyed pride in the collective efforts of the team and players who contributed to the event’s success. He described it as a substantial gathering, reiterating the excitement surrounding the start of the NRL season back in Australia, where fans are celebrating the game.

With ongoing plans to enhance and expand this festive initiative, the ARLC aims to solidify rugby league’s presence in the Las Vegas market and beyond in the coming years.
