Peter Dutton, the leader of the Liberal Party, recently introduced a $90 million initiative aimed at addressing domestic violence, sparking discussions about the inclusion of transgender women in this context. During the announcement, which included plans to criminalise the use of mobile phones for tracking or threatening intimate partners, Dutton was questioned on whether transgender women would be considered part of the women’s safety measures.

In his response, Dutton cited a recent ruling from the UK Supreme Court, which defined a woman strictly in terms of biological sex. He stated, “I think a woman is defined as an adult female and that is the definition.” Despite this stance, Dutton indicated that the program would provide support for education and early intervention for individuals “regardless of gender.”

The Coalition’s plan aims to enhance protections against domestic violence over the next decade and includes proposals for a national domestic violence register, giving police access to offender histories. They also plan to legislate against the use of mobile devices and computers to instil fear or stalk partners, highlighting Dutton’s background as a former police officer familiar with the long-term consequences of domestic violence.

The funding for this initiative will target various strategies, such as early intervention programs and measures to combat financial abuse. Collectively, both the Labor Party and the Coalition are set to contribute to a broader national effort, pledging $4.7 billion towards domestic violence prevention as part of a collaborative cabinet initiative.

Dutton underscored the urgency of addressing these societal issues, emphasising his commitment to creating safer environments for families, women, and children. If elected, he expressed determination to effect substantive change in the fight against domestic violence in Australia.
