During a recent speech at the Lowy Institute in Sydney, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton faced interruptions from anti-nuclear energy protesters. The activists voiced their concerns, with one shouting, “Why are you lying to the Australian people about the cost of nuclear?” as security and federal police removed them. One of the protesters displayed a banner stating, “Nuclear lies cost us all.”

Despite the disruption, Dutton continued his address, which largely centred on international affairs, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and tensions in the Middle East. However, he was interrupted once more by another individual whose remarks were inaudible, but who was visibly removed from the event by security personnel.

A significant part of Dutton’s speech focused on the Coalition’s stance on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, assuring attendees that it would remain protected in any future trade agreements with the United States. He stated, “The protection of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme has been paramount under all free trade agreements finalised by the Coalition,” emphasising its importance in negotiations under his potential leadership.

The protests were carried out by members of the Rising Tide environmental group, who expressed concerns about the Coalition’s proposed nuclear energy plan. Zack Schofield, one of the protesters, highlighted the potential financial burden on taxpayers, asserting that the nuclear initiative could cost around $600 billion and increase energy bills by up to $1,200, alongside contributing significantly to carbon emissions by 2050.

Overall, the event underscored the tensions surrounding energy policy in Australia, particularly the debate over nuclear energy and its implications for the environment and public finances.
