US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth stated on Wednesday the necessity for an end to the Ukraine-Russia conflict, declaring that Ukraine’s membership in NATO is “unrealistic.” As the Trump administration shifts focus to US border security and China deterrence, Hegseth indicated that European forces should lead post-war security in Ukraine, clarifying that US troops would not participate.

He asserted that any security guarantees for Ukraine must involve capable European forces, rejecting any deployment of American troops. Hegseth also deemed it unrealistic for Ukraine to return to its pre-2014 borders, a sentiment echoed by several NATO allies who do not anticipate reclaiming Crimea.

While expressing firm commitment to NATO, Hegseth urged allies to boost defence spending to 5% of GDP. His statements suggest a notable change from the Biden administration’s approach, which highlighted transatlantic alliances and assistance to Ukraine.

Despite the scaling back of US involvement, military aid from previous packages remains in place, yet the need for more advanced weaponry persists. Hegseth’s remarks have raised concerns among Ukrainian officials, as many believe American leadership is crucial for meaningful security guarantees. Ultimately, the evolving stance points towards a more independent European security landscape, with the US taking a step back.
