A significant data breach in south-east Queensland has raised concerns as the personal information of thousands may have been compromised. Joseph Kelly, a man in his 30s, is accused of breaking into several mortgage brokerages and tax offices, with reports indicating that these incidents occurred between Monday and Wednesday of this week.

Court documents reveal that Kelly allegedly targeted multiple locations on the Gold Coast, as well as offices in Logan and Ipswich. He is accused of stealing computers and filing cabinets, reportedly transferring sensitive client information, which may consist of drivers’ licences, passports, payslips, and mortgage applications, onto an encrypted device of his own.

Authorities suggest that Kelly could face multiple fraud charges for each individual whose data has been allegedly taken. ITP Queensland has reached out to 64 affected clients, while Mortgage Choice is still determining the extent of the impact on its customers. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has confirmed that its systems remain secure and have not been compromised in this breach.

In addition to the data-related charges, Kelly faces charges related to possessing illegal drugs and attempting to gain entry to another office in Robina. He is currently in custody, and his case is scheduled to appear again at the Southport Magistrates Court next Monday.
