Payne Haas has discussed his recent decision to switch his international rugby league allegiance to Samoa, addressing critics who questioned his choice. In an appearance on Nine’s 100% Footy, Haas revealed that he had contemplated this move for the past two years following earlier experiences representing Samoa.

The news of his potential switch first surfaced in April, but it was only confirmed last week. Notably, Haas’s decision was made before his former Brisbane Broncos coach, Kevin Walters, took over the Kangaroos’ coaching role. By the time Walters reached out for a discussion, Haas had already solidified his choice.

Although aware of the nature of Walters’ request, Haas mentioned that their relationship remained strong. He praised Walters for his understanding and support, affirming that their connection would not suffer as a result of his decision to play for Samoa.

Haas, who has Samoan, Filipino, and Swiss heritage and was born in Newcastle, has faced criticism regarding player nationality switches. In response, he expressed pride in his multicultural background and indicated that he dismisses the opinions of those who do not understand his perspective.

The 25-year-old’s announcement has prompted speculation around fellow players Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, both of whom are also contemplating joining the Samoan side. While Haas acknowledged discussions with them, he refrained from sharing specific details, emphasising the importance of personal choice in such decisions.

In sum, Haas stands firm in his choice to represent Samoa, valuing his diverse heritage and urging critics to appreciate his journey.
