The search for a new head coach for the Australian rugby league team has seemingly concluded, with former Broncos coach Kevin Walters poised to take over the role from Mal Meninga. Meninga recently accepted the position of head coach for the new Perth Bears, sparking extensive speculation about who would lead the Kangaroos.

Prominent figures such as Brad Fittler and Cameron Smith were in the mix for the position; however, the ARL Commission has reportedly decided on Walters. Smith is being considered for an assistant coaching role under Walters, as confirmed by The Sydney Morning Herald.

The ARL Commission plans to meet soon to finalise Walters’ appointment, which will see him at the helm during the Ashes tour. He is expected to be on a short-term three-Test deal for this assignment. Success here could open the door for a longer tenure, although Walters would then be restricted from pursuing any club-level coaching roles.

Walters has expressed his excitement regarding the potential role, stating in a recent interview that coaching the Australian team would be a significant honour. He acknowledged the anticipation surrounding the final decision and conveyed his gratitude if given the chance.

The upcoming Ashes tour will be crucial, as a successful outcome may secure Walters’ position for an extended period, while the terms of his contract would limit his involvement with clubs during this time. The rugby community is keenly awaiting official confirmation of Walters’ appointment and the subsequent direction of the Kangaroos under his leadership.
