Significant disruptions have occurred at Sydney Airport today, with over 50 flights cancelled, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded. The issue began when Airservices Australia reduced aircraft movements due to adverse weather conditions. The situation was exacerbated by a late-notice staff sick call, resulting in 26 flight departures and 32 arrivals being scrapped.

Airlines struggled to inform passengers, with many being notified just before boarding. Although a replacement air traffic controller was eventually sourced, the initial shortage led to widespread delays. An Airservices spokesperson stated that they are implementing measures to minimise further disruptions and are attempting to accommodate additional flights where possible, while expressing regret for the timing of these cancellations following a smooth Christmas travel period.

Virgin Airlines is actively communicating with affected passengers, striving to rebook them on the next available flights; however, many may need to postpone their travel until tomorrow. In addition to the airport chaos, commuters faced significant challenges as 90 per cent of train services were cancelled due to unrelated industrial action.
